As is the case with most of Taylor's Grand Symphony models, the 516CE makes for a great strummer with it's bold midrange, especially in the low end. What sets this 500 Series guitar apart is the mahogany sides that add to and focus the midrange even more, making for a very robust and meaty tone. A neo-vintage look is achieved with grained ivoroid rosette and binding, and a Century fretboard inlay.

Grand Symphony Body
If there's one word I would use to describe the Grand Symphony, it's bold. Similar to a Grand Auditorium, but with a wider waist and bigger lower bout. You would think that with all of this robust tone it would drown out the higher mids and top end, but that signature Taylor balance is still there, with thick clear highs. The GS is great for players with a driving attack and strummers or pickers who love fullness, volume, and sustain.
Sitka Spruce/Mahogany Tone Woods
The Taylor 500 Series uses Tropical Mahogany, which gives a clear and direct focus to the tone, almost a no-nonsense tone wood. Initially, it is a brighter tone, but will open up as you play it more over time, sounding better and better with age. Now, to give it that signature Taylor tone, the 210ce is topped with sitka spruce, Bob Taylor's favorite wood for an all-around great guitar. There really isn't anything this wood is bad for, it can suit flatpickers, aggressive strummers, or even fingerstyle players, and everything in between.
Expression System 2 Pickup
The 516ce comes equipped with an Expression System 2 Pickup and onboard preamp, Taylor's revolutionary patented pickup design. Three individually calibrated piezo sensors sit behind the saddle to capture a dynamic range of acoustic sound. You can be sure that the same sound you hear acoustically will be there when you plug in to a PA, acoustic amp, or even straight to recording software.

Tropical Mahogany Back and Sides - Mahogany is a good wood to anchor a discussion of tones, as a lot of other wood tones can be described in relation to it. Its essential sonic profile is well represented in the midrange frequencies. Acoustic guitars in general tend to live in the midrange portion of the sound spectrum, but mahogany in particular displays a lot of midrange character.
Taylor Expression System - People love the clear, full acoustic tone of their Taylors. Why should it be any different when they plug in? That's why we spent several years developing our own onboard acoustic pickup and preamp. Taylor's ground-breaking Expression System (ES) was designed to naturally amplify the warm acoustic sound of your guitar.
Forward Shifted with Relief Rout - Our patented relief rout is a tone-enhancing voicing technique in which a groove is carved along the inside edges of the top. This groove is similar in function to the re-curve on a violin - it "loosens up" the edges of the top, generating extra flexibility without sacrificing structural integrity. We first began using this groove in 2002. The result is increased bass and volume with a balanced tone.
