A Complete Guide To the Different Types of Electric Guitars

By Chris Vale March 29, 2021

One of the truly unique aspects of playing the guitar is the amount of customization available. When it comes down to it, it would almost be easier to name the things about a guitar that you can’t change. The style of an electric guitar is a choice that will have one of the most significant impacts on the sound you produce. This is a complete guide to the different types of electric guitars.

Solid-Body

The first type of electric guitar to consider is a solid-body. This is the standard for electric guitars and is usually the first thing that springs to mind when people think about the instrument. Solid-body guitars are made with solid pieces of wood and come in many different variations, including the Stratocaster, Telecaster, Les Paul, and the SG, each with their own unique design and features.

Hollow

Hollow body guitars came in style to compete with the volume produced by other jazz band instruments. This type of guitar has a more acoustic-sounding tone than a semi-hollow body. They do experience a high amount of feedback, so prepare yourself for how to deal with that.

Semi-Hollow

With a similar construction technique, semi-hollow guitars are also popular in many music styles, including rock and roll, blues, and jazz. These guitars work well in practically any genre that utilizes distortion. Semi-hollow bodied guitars also eliminate much of the feedback present in hollow body guitars.

Acoustic

It would be impossible to compose a complete guide to the different types of electric guitars without looking at electroacoustic options. They’re nearly identical to a standard acoustic guitar, except they have electronic pickups or microphones to capture the noise. This gives you the option of recording or performing with an acoustic instead of an electric.
