Named after Ted McCarty, a pioneer of the electric guitar and musical instrument industry, the McCarty model embodies PRS's most up-to-date findings while honoring the golden age of guitar design. This vintage-appointed instrument features a bound, 22-fret Pattern neck and a slightly thicker back engineered for enhanced tone and sustain.

Anchored by a stoptail bridge with brass inserts and non-locking PRS Phase III tuners with brass shafts, every component is chosen to maximize resonance and sustain. The McCarty III treble and bass pickups were spec'd by Paul Reed Smith and the PRS New Products Engineering team—the result of hands-on research into coveted vintage pickup models combined with advancements in signal analysis and tuning technology. These vintage-inspired humbuckers deliver vocal clarity alongside a full, warm tone. A push/pull tone control and 3-way toggle pickup switch provide complete tonal versatility.

In the late 1980s, Paul Reed Smith invited Ted McCarty to consult on guitar design and production techniques. Beyond mentorship, McCarty became a trusted friend and collaborator at PRS. In 1994, the first McCarty model was released—an instrument synthesizing the full spectrum of techniques and knowledge Paul gained from Ted, refined through his own decades as a master guitar builder.
